🔎💡 Five reasons why your Instagram Account got Disabled (and how to recover it)

Getting your personal or your clients Instagram account disabled is a nightmare for everyone involved (except Instagram, obviously). But the questions everyone is asking:

Why did my Instagram account get disabled?

Answering this question is not as easy as it seems - Instagram does not share any information regarding a disabled or banned account.

The official state by Instagram is:

If your Instagram account was disabled, you’ll see a message telling you when you try to log in. Accounts that don't follow our Community Guidelines or Terms of Use may be disabled without warning. We suggest that you review the Community Guidelines carefully along with the posts on all accounts you've created. Keep in mind, we may permanently remove an account that repeatedly violates the Community Guidelines or Terms of Use

and the message when you log in into an disabled account only reads:

Which repeats one thing: You violated the Terms of Use and/or Community Guidelines, and your Instagram account is now disabled.

Reasons why your Instagram account got disabled or banned

Reason #1 - Copyrighted Material and Copyright Infringement

This makes number one for a lot of accounts out there. Only taking another users post or story and reposting it can be already enough. The same goes for using music in your videos that require licensing (Everything that you might hear on the radio, for example) to be used.

Instagram is always monitoring what users on their platform upload and post - and who is blatantly stealing from who. Penalties for this offence can range anywhere from an Action Block, getting temporarily disabled up to a permanent ban/deactivation of the account. Even if the Instagram algorithm does not find your content, you are not safe. If the original author dislikes your copy, he can report the copyright infringement to Instagram. After providing enough proof for his claim, the content or even the account will be removed.

Reason #2 - Scraping Account information and User data

This is a bit more technical one and mostly affects Internet Marketers. (Web) scraping is the process of extracting information and data from a website or API so it can be used by another program or purpose.

For Instagram, this means, public Profile data such as

• Number of follows
• Number of posts
• Account name
• Account Email
• Profile picture
• Photos
• Posts
• Comments

and much more information can be extracted from public profiles with relative ease. This is obviously against Instagram's Terms of Use and the accounts caught doing so excessively will be permanently disabled as a consequence. Legitimate developers and companies can apply for access to the official Instagram API to avoid getting accounts disabled.

Reason #3 - Posting Images and Videos violating the Community Guidelines

Instagram removes content (and sometimes also the account posting it) that violates their Community Guidelines, which includes things like:

• Nudity and Pornography in Videos/Images
• Animal Abuse
• Drug usage or glorification
• Violence
• Self-harm

If you wish to keep your account and don't want it to get disabled, it's best to stay clear of such content.

Reason #4 - Getting reported by other Users

Depending on your account content and niche, you might upset some users on the platform. Or maybe your competitors are trying to play dirty and get you off the platform.

In either case, other Instagram users can report your profile and content as either Spam or Inappropriate within the App and via the Website. If you have any content mentioned earlier, this will most likely get your account blocked. It's also possible that a malicious user will report your account over and over using different accounts, in which case Instagram automatically might disable your account without any human interaction.

Reason #5 - Spamming your Followers via Direct Message (DM)

Nobody likes to receive Spam - Nobody. And yet, page owners think it's OK to DM their followers with a copy-pasted message. While it's true that direct messages increase the Engagement rate of your users, spamming them mindlessly with DMs will do the opposite. And if you take it too far, either Instagram will step in themselves and disabled our account for Spam or your own followers will report your Profile (see #4) as Spam and will unfollow you again.
